Blue Whiting Fishery Underway in International Waters

The 2026 blue whiting fishery has begun in the international zone, marking the continuation of a pelagic fishery that has operated since the late 1970s.

During the past week, 34,700 tonnes of blue whiting were reported for fishmeal and oil production, alongside 7,049 tonnes landed for human consumption. A total of 25 vessels were active over the reporting period.

Fishing conditions have been mixed. Catches have varied and weather conditions have at times disrupted operations. Strong westerly winds over the weekend in particular limited activity across parts of the fishing grounds.

Despite the unsettled start, increased activity is expected in the coming weeks, particularly in areas west of Ireland where vessels traditionally concentrate effort at this stage of the season.

The blue whiting fishery, conducted far west in the Atlantic, remains a central source of raw material for reduction plants and an important revenue stream for the Norwegian fishing industry.

NVG Herring Moving South West of Lofoten

Seven vessels targeted Norwegian spring-spawning herring, known as NVG herring, during the past week.

A total of 3,860 tonnes were reported landed. Fishing activity took place from north-west of Andøya and extended southwards to west of Lofoten.

The herring ranged in size from 230 to 293 grams. Fishermen reported roe percentages between 18 and 19 per cent, indicating that spawning has not yet commenced and is likely at least a week away.

The stock’s gradual movement south west of Lofoten reflects the early phase of its seasonal migration.

Horse Mackerel and North Sea Herring Landings

Forty tonnes of horse mackerel were reported last week, with two vessels landing catches from Rogaland. Fish sizes ranged between 450 and 600 grams.

In addition, one vessel reported seven tonnes of North Sea herring at an average size of 270 grams, also from Rogaland.

While volumes for horse mackerel and North Sea herring remain modest compared to blue whiting and NVG herring, the figures confirm continued activity across multiple pelagic fisheries.
