Skagen will maintain its position as Denmark’s largest fishing port

In 2023, the port of Skagen will maintain its position as Denmark’s largest fishing port – this is shown by fresh figures from the Danish Fisheries Agency.

56 percent of the total amount of fish landed in Denmark in 2023 was landed in Skagen, where a total of 412,000 tons were landed. In 2022, 51 percent were landed in Skagen, i.e. an increase of 5 percent on the total amount of fish landed in kilos.

There has also been an increase – even very marked – in the value of the fish landed. In 2022, fish worth 1.2 billion kroner (€161m/£138m) was landed in Skagen. In 2023, fish landed in Skagen worth close to DKK 500 million more than in 2022, namely DKK 1.7 billion (€228m/£195.7m).
The port of Skagen’s total market share in % of value was 34 percent in 2022, where it will be 41 percent for 2023.

It is especially for landings of herring and industrial fish that the price per kilo has increased, but also for consumer fish.
In 2023, there has been a significant decline in the shrimp fishery, while the lobster fishery has been roughly at the same level as in 2022.

Director of the Port of Skagen, Willy B. Hansen states;
“It is positive for the service industry and for the port’s production companies that more and more fishing vessels choose to land their catch here. The Port of Skagen continues to focus on developing and improving facilities for fishing, as well as supporting the green transition. We currently have several projects in the pipeline, among other things, the Port of Skagen is part of a sustainable EU project, which deals with establishing shore power for larger fishing vessels, so that they can be connected to shore power while they land.”
