The Pelagic Advisory Council has called on the EU Commission to prioritise the welfare of fish in the pelagic fisheries
The Pelagic Advisory Council (PelAC) has announced that fish welfare in pelagic fisheries is now a key area of focus for the industry, reflecting growing societal and consumer concerns about the treatment of marine species.
In a letter to Charlina Vitcheva, Director General of the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, PelAC confirmed that fish welfare is a priority for its members and will play an important role in future policy discussions.
To tackle the issue, PelAC has created a dedicated Working Group (WGIII) on Ecosystem and Horizontal Issues, which will be responsible for addressing fish welfare concerns. Additionally, the newly formed Focus Group on Fish Welfare in Pelagic Fisheries (FGFW) will be tasked with conducting further research and gathering expert opinions to develop comprehensive guidelines for improving welfare standards in pelagic fisheries.
Esben Sverdrup Jensen, Chair of PelAC, explained the importance of this initiative: “While we are in the early stages of addressing fish welfare, it is clear that this issue resonates with consumers and policymakers alike. Ensuring the humane treatment of fish not only meets societal expectations but also supports the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry.”
PelAC has already convened two meetings focused on fish welfare, inviting experts to present challenges, identify key areas for research, and discuss the potential policy implications. These discussions are expected to inform future recommendations for improving welfare practices across the pelagic fishing sector.
PelAC has also requested that the European Commission and other relevant bodies keep them informed and consult them on any processes regarding fish welfare, as they continue to develop their stance on this critical issue.
The growing focus on fish welfare is part of a broader movement to enhance sustainability and ethical practices in the fishing industry, with PelAC committed to leading the way in integrating welfare considerations into fisheries management.
