The NWWAC has issued advice to the Commission regarding the effectiveness of remedial measures for cod and whiting in the Celtic Sea

In a recent communication to Ms. Charlina Vitcheva, the North Western Waters Advisory Council (NWWAC) has addressed pressing concerns regarding the effectiveness of remedial measures for cod and whiting in the Celtic Sea.

The NWWAC acknowledges the commitment of the EU to collaborate with the UK on this issue, with a focus on achieving a level playing field in fisheries management.

During discussions at its plenary meetings in March, the NWWAC formulated several recommendations and requests:

1/. Access to Scientific Data: The NWWAC emphasised the importance of receiving the most recent scientific data on technical measures in the Celtic Sea to ensure informed discussions and effective management advice.

2/. Consideration of Evolving Fisheries Landscape: The NWWAC urged the Commission to consider the evolving fisheries landscape, including changes in the number of active vessels and the impact on existing measures.

3/. Analysis of Catch and Discard Figures: The NWWAC stressed the need to analyse catch and discard figures using up-to-date data, considering changes in fishing activity and modifications of the technical measures framework.

4/. Evaluation of Existing Measures: Members of the NWWAC expressed agreement that seasonal closures and additional technical measures are not necessary in the Celtic Sea. They called for an evaluation of the effectiveness of selectivity measures already in place before considering new ones.

5/. Simplification of Regulations: The NWWAC recommended simplifying rules governing fisheries operations in the region to enhance clarity and compliance, thereby promoting effective enforcement and a level playing field for all stakeholders.

Additionally, the NWWAC announced plans to organise a webinar on the impacts of climate change on scientific assessments for Celtic Sea cod. The webinar aims to gather relevant experts to address the lack of operational understanding about the effects of climate change on cod survivability and the future viability of cod fisheries in the Celtic Sea.

The NWWAC stands ready to contribute to ongoing discussions on technical measures in the Celtic Sea and looks forward to collaborating with DG MARE and NWW Member States in developing effective and sustainable management strategies.
