The Norwegian coastal cod fishery outside 12nm receives new MSC Certificate following the withdrawal of an objection by the WWF

The Norwegian coastal cod fishery has received a new Marine Stewardship Council Certificate (MSCc) following the withdrawal of an objection by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), following consultations with the DNV and Fiskarlaget.

The fishery was under threat after the WWF made an objection to the certification in a disagreement over redfish.

The DNV has made proposed recommendations for a review of the management strategy for ordinary redfish to ensure that the current cod fishery outside 12 nautical miles does not prevent the rebuilding of the stock over time.

The fishing team has also submitted a revised action plan, with several concrete measures that will help to improve the management strategy and further reduce bycatch.

The proposals have been accepted by all parties and will now be implemented by DNV in an updated certification report for the cod fishery outside 12 nautical miles. DNV has signalled that a new certificate will be published in early August. As soon as the new certificate is published, cod within 12 nautical miles will lose their status as certified.

Tor Bjørklund Larsen, who on behalf of the Fishermen’s Association, the sales teams and the Seafood Council, works with the MSC certificates in Norwegian fisheries says, “The parties have conducted a constructive dialogue over several weeks now and it has been clarified that the certification company DNV will make a recommendation on further measures related to bycatch on redfish.

“The plan is anchored in ongoing work with redfish in both the Directorate of Fisheries and the Institute of Marine Research. We will now look at how bycatch can be further reduced with a view to further building up the stock.”

He said that the case is now being followed up with an action plan.

What is the status of the various Certificates?

Haddock within 12 nautical miles: No valid certificate

Cod within and outside 12 nautical miles: The current certificate is valid until a new report is available from DNV on cod fishing outside 12 nautical miles. After a new report is published in August, cod lose their certificate within 12 nautical miles.

Haddock outside 12 nautical miles: New valid certificate.
