The Ministry of Trade and Industry in Norway has decided to send for consultation the internal sales of purse-seine fishing vessels

The Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry has decided to send for consultation a proposal to repeal the instructions on the sale of vessels with purse-seine licences from northern Norway to southern Norway.

The two instructions from 1992 and 2002 mean that the fishing authorities shall not grant an acquisition permit for the voluntary sale of vessels with purse-seine licences from the three northernmost counties (Finnmark, Troms and Nordland) to southern Norway.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has received several inquiries from shipping companies that own and operate vessels with purse-seine licences registered in northern Norway requesting that the instructions be revoked. The instructions prevent growth for northern Norwegian purse seine shipping companies, affect the price of vessels with purse-seine licences that are registered in northern Norway and inhibit the northern Norwegian purse-seine industry.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry wants strong purse seine companies throughout the country and finds it natural that all purse seine companies are regulated equally and can operate under equal conditions.

The deadline for submitting consultation responses is Friday 16 April 2021. The consultation is open, and anyone can submit consultation input. Consultation responses are submitted digitally using the form on the consultation page.
