A new national cod plan for the Danish fishing industry in the Skagerrak and the North Sea enters into force on 15 August 2020.
The Danish Fisheries Agency has announced that a new national cod plan for the Skagerrak and the North Sea enters into force on 15 August 2020.
In order to protect cod in the Skagerrak and the North Sea, the EU has decided on a number of additional measures for demersal fishing in the Skagerrak and the North Sea. The measures will enter into force on 15 August 2020. The measures include the definition of ‘limited areas’, within which there is a requirement for the use of more selective gear, or that a national cod plan is established with a view to maintaining catches within the set quotas. Denmark has 24% of the total fishing opportunities for cod in the North Sea and Skagerrak.
EU rules stipulate that demersal fishing with longlines and towed gears (gear codes: OTB, OTT, OT, TBN, TBS, TB, TX, PTB, SDN, SSC, SX, LL, LLS) with mesh sizes from 90 mm throughout the Skagerrak ( The EU part), and with mesh sizes from 70 mm in an area of the North Sea off the west coast of Jutland and in the northern North Sea in British waters, supplementary measures are subject. Net fishing and beam trawling are excluded from the measures.
For Danish vessels, the total measures are determined through a national cod plan. The plan calls for a sufficient quota basis for demersal fishing in the areas, alternatively that more selective gear or electronic monitoring is used for the purpose of fully documented fishing. The plan also includes a strengthened effort regarding control and monitoring of whether the measures are complied with. It is expected that the possibility will be provided that vessels that in the years 2017-2019 have not had more than 5% cod catches can be exempted from the above requirements on more detailed conditions. In order to protect juvenile cod, an area in the Skagerrak, northwest of the ‘Reef’ is closed for the covered gear types until the end of the year. The specific measures are set out in an executive order, which enters into force on 15 August.
In week 32, a link is expected to be inserted here for consultation on the executive order implementing the new national cod plan.
The cod stock is a jointly managed stock with Norway. In Norwegian waters, closed areas have been determined per. July 1, 2020 in order to protect juvenile cod.
