“The O’Flaherty Brothers are one of the biggest employers in the South-East and the State see fit to come down on them like a ton of bricks.
“Many of these men gave up their time recently to spend hours and days searching for their missing friend and colleague who was lost in tragic circumstances.
“They have only fished for a handful of days in the last month and face further days tied up with storms forecast over the weekend.
“This cannot be allowed to continue while their Spanish counterparts are treated completely differently.”
The news will come as another blow to the community of Kilmore Quay who are still in mourning after the loss of local fishermen Willie Whelan and Joe Sinnott, when their scallop-dredger, the ‘Alize’ sank in early January this year.
Fishing boats in Kilmore Quay and boats from the surrounding area joined in the search, missing out on valuable fishing days. Between bad weather and the three weeks search, the lost fishing days has caused hardship for the fishermen and their families.
