GSSI has opened a Public Consultation for the benchmarking of the Marine Stewardship Council

GSSI Opens Public Consultation for MSC Benchmarking Under Version 2.0 of the Global Benchmark Tool

The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) has announced the commencement of a public consultation period for the benchmarking of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) under version 2.0 of the Global Benchmark Tool.

The consultation is scheduled to remain open to the public from 13 December 13 2023, to 13 January 2024, spanning a 30-day period.

MSC’s Journey Through Benchmarking

Having received its initial recognition from GSSI in 2017, the Marine Stewardship Council is currently undergoing benchmarking for its Fisheries Standard (version 2.1, 2018). This process is a crucial step in ensuring that the MSC’s standards align with global best practices for sustainable fisheries management.

Transparent Benchmark Process

GSSI is dedicated to fostering a transparent benchmarking process that provides ample opportunities for public engagement. Individuals and organisations are invited to share their insights and comments on the MSC’s benchmarking process. The submission of comments can be facilitated through the form linked on the GSSI website.

Review and Decision Process

Upon the conclusion of the 30-day Public Consultation, the Independent Experts and Benchmark Committee will meticulously review all the comments received. Subsequently, a final recommendation regarding the recognition of MSC will be presented to the GSSI Steering Board. The comments from the Public Consultation will be made publicly available after the GSSI makes its final decision on the continued recognition of MSC.

GSSI Recognition Process Overview

The year 2021 marked the initiation of GSSI’s Recognition Processes under Version 2.0 of the Global Benchmark Tool. This revision brought updates to the GSSI Benchmark Procedures, offering a comprehensive outline of the content, requirements, and background of the Tool’s current process.
