Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D, is today attending a meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels where the Council is discussing Council Conclusion on the Long-term Vision for Rural Areas.

The Council agreed that support for rural areas should reflect the pivotal role rural areas are playing to meet the economic, environmental and social challenges the EU and its member States are facing, including the ones created by the current geopolitical situation.

Minister McConalogue highlighted the need for all EU policies to support rural communities and stated;

“We must ensure that the vital role played by farmers, fishers and foresters as the bedrock of the rural economy is recognised as we develop policies for rural areas.  They are at the heart of rural and coastal communities.”

Speaking at the Council, Minister McConalogue also highlighted the increasing challenges that are facing farmers, stating:

“European farmers face ongoing challenges to provide food while also ensuring the sustainable management of the environment. Farmers need the support of a strong Common Agricultural Policy to ensure that production can continue.”
