The French Secretary of State for the Sea Hervé Berville announced the extension of the fuel aid scheme for the French fishing industry
Traveling to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais) on Friday 29 July, the French Secretary of State for the Sea Hervé Berville announced the extension of the fuel aid system for fishermen.
The fuel aid scheme implemented on March 17 to compensate 35 cents per litre of fuel purchased for the fishing sector was to end on July 31, 2022.
In view of the consequences of the war in Ukraine which persist on the fishing sector and a price of fuel which remains at a high level for fishing professionals following the latest sanctions imposed on Russia, a maintenance of the aid system was decided by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, on the proposal of the Secretary of State.
The aid will be extended until September 30, 2022, its amount will remain at 35 cents (excluding taxes) per litre of diesel. It will concern all professionals within an unchanged perimeter and will represent a financial commitment from the State which may represent up to 18 million euros.
At the same time, Hervé Berville, who went to Brussels last week, obtained from the European Commission an increase in the ceiling for additional aid under the Ukraine temporary framework to €105,000.
The State Secretariat for the Sea has indicated that public support is intended to be gradually replaced by reinforced solidarity mechanisms within the sector: all the links in the fishing sector must be able to propose actions to strengthen the competitiveness of the sector and its sustainability, and thus support fishermen and wholesalers.
Hervé Berville proposed that the State support the sector in this dynamic and to do this from the end of August, the actors of the large distribution, wholesalers and fishermen will be brought together by the government to build a mechanism which can ensure the sustainability of French fishing.
“As I committed myself to when I took office, my priority is to provide concrete solutions to fishermen and wholesalers who have been strongly impacted by the increase in the price of diesel for boats. On my proposal, the Prime Minister therefore decided to extend the fuel aid which was to end on July 31. I also obtained from the European Commission an increase in the ceiling for State aid per company. With these measures in which the Government plays its full part, fishermen will be able to benefit from more visibility to get through the next few months. I will also work on the long term with the fishing industry,” said Hervé Berville.
