The European Commission launched € 5.7 million of EU funding for the Sustainable Blue Economy in European Sea Basins
The European Commission has announced a new call for proposals, funded through the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), aimed at bolstering sustainable blue economy initiatives in Europe’s sea basins.
A total of €5.7 million will be allocated to projects focusing on Smart Specialisation and Regenerative Ocean Farming and Algae Innovation.
This call marks an important step in Europe’s effort to develop its blue economy, aligning with the EU’s net-zero climate targets and its commitment to fostering innovation, research, and sustainability in sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, and marine renewable energy.
Two Key Project Areas:
-
Maritime Regional Cooperation & Smart Specialisation
Projects under this theme will create interregional partnerships that explore innovative solutions in blue economy sectors like marine biotechnology and coastal tourism. Activities will be carried out in sea basins including the Black Sea, Atlantic, and Western Mediterranean. -
Regenerative Ocean Farming & Algae Innovation
This topic encourages ocean farming of local seaweed species and explores environmental benefits. Projects aim to boost algae-based product development, with applications spanning regions like the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Atlantic.
Project Deadlines and Support
Proposals must be submitted by 18 February 2025. The CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency) will host an online Info Day on 15 October 2024, offering guidance to potential applicants.
With a broader budget of €6.108 billion for 2021-2027, the EMFAF supports sustainable fishing, prosperous coastal communities, and marine conservation across Europe.
