MSC Belgium has nominated the Dutch shrimp fishery for ‘most important MSC-certified fishery’
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Belgium has nominated the Dutch shrimp fishery for the prestigious ‘Best MSC-Certified Fishery’ award.
This nomination is part of the MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards Belgium, recognising the Dutch shrimp fishery for its exceptional sustainability practices. The winners will be announced on 12 September 2024.
Awards in Various Categories
Since 2022, the MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards Belgium have honoured organisations committed to advancing sustainability in the fishing industry. Awards are presented in several categories, with the MSC selecting organisations each year that ensure sustainable seafood for consumers. To be nominated, organisations must align with MSC’s vision. An independent panel of experts ultimately decides the winner in each category.
Nomination
There are nine categories, one of which is ‘Best MSC-Certified Fishery’. In this category, three fisheries have been nominated: the Dutch mussel fishery, the Icelandic cod fishery, and the Dutch grey shrimp fishery. The Coöperatieve Visserij Organisatie (CVO), which represents the Dutch Fishermen’s Association, manages the MSC certification for the Dutch shrimp fishery and is delighted with the nomination.
Amerik Schuitemaker from CVO commented, “We are proud to provide consumers with sustainably, responsibly, and locally caught shrimp. This nomination acknowledges the efforts of the shrimp fishery in taking sustainable steps and gives recognition to our hard work. It also motivates us to continue improving our practices, ensuring that consumers can enjoy MSC-certified Dutch shrimp for years to come.”
