Project fund of DKK 66.9 million (€9m/£7.7m) to generate new knowledge about the state of the sea and fish stocks.
The Danish Government has announced a new project to generate new knowledge about the state of the sea and its fish stocks.
Making the announcement today, the Danish Fisheries Authority said, “Our marine environment is currently facing significant climate and environmental changes that challenge the balance between a sustainable sea and sustainable fisheries. A new grant scheme of DKK 66.9 million has now been opened for data collection and enhanced knowledge about the impact of climate change on our marine environment and fish stocks, as well as for testing methods for more sustainable fishing and addressing issues related to seals and cormorants.”
The grant scheme “Marine Knowledge” with funding of DKK 66.9 million (€9m/£7.7m) has been launched under the Danish program for the Marine, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) for projects aimed at increasing the understanding of how to achieve a sustainable sea and sustainable fisheries.
The funds will support projects within three focus areas:
- Enhancing knowledge about the state of the sea and the impact of climate change on the marine environment for the purpose of assessments and fisheries management.
- Development of selective fishing gear or methods to improve the ability to catch specific fish, avoiding unnecessary bycatch and being more environmentally friendly.
- Proposals for solving problems where seals and cormorants are causing harm to fish stocks.
“We are currently facing some fundamental climate and environmental changes that challenge both the marine environment and fish stocks. Data and knowledge about the state of the sea and the testing of new methods for sustainable fishing are crucial for the sustainable management of the sea and fisheries,” says Nanna Møller, Director of the Danish Fisheries Authority.
