Danish fishing vessel reliant on access to Norwegian waters will be locked out from 01 January 2023 as the negotiations between the EU and Norway have stalled and are not expected to resume before that.

An agreement has not yet been concluded between the EU and Norway for 2023, and important access for EU fishermen – including Danish fishermen – to Norwegian waters in not least the North Sea and the Skagerrak is also not in place.

The negotiations have broken down, and they are not expected to resume until the beginning of 2023.

“It is deeply regrettable that the EU and Norway apparently cannot find each other and are taking Danish fishing hostage. Access to Norwegian waters is the alpha and omega for many fishermen – it is a prerequisite for their fishing. Therefore, an agreement must be in place as soon as possible. It can only go slowly,” says Kenn Skau Fischer, director of Danish Fisheries Association.

It is reported that the EU is ready to sign the agreements, but the Norwegians do not want to. This disappoints the Danish fishermen, who otherwise have good cooperation with their Norwegian colleagues.

Danish and EU found themselves in a similar situation in recent years with the protracted Brexit negotiations in 2020, Norway would also not sign the agreements between the EU and Norway, and no boats could therefore not fish in each other’s waters. It was not until March 2021 that the agreement came into place.

“For all intents and purposes, that scenario must not repeat itself. Now get the agreements in place so we can get the fishing going. If the Danish fishermen do not get access to Norwegian waters as soon as possible, it will have major consequences for the Danish fishing ports and the fishermen in West and North Jutland. We therefore call on the new fisheries minister and the EU Commission to use all means to ensure access to our fishing grounds,” says Kenn Skau Fischer.
