A fisherman has died following a fatal incident onboard an Irish-registered fishing vessel off the coast of Kerry

A fisherman in his late 20’s has died following an accident onboard an Irish-registered trawlers while fishing for nephrops in the Porcupine Basin.

The incident happened around 100 miles off the Kerry coast in the early hours of yesterday morning, Thursday 14 December 2023.

The Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Valentia was contacted just after 0300 yesterday morning and the accident was reported. It is understood the young man had suffered his injuries in a freak accident onboard. The deceased was then taken home onboard the boat which arrived last night at its home port.

An industry spokesperson has asked for the family’s privacy to be respected and thanked the Harbour Master and his staff, along with the Gardaí, MSO, HSA who done their duties professionally and sensitively, and he wished to thank the charity LAST and all the local community who are helping the family of the deceased through this sad time.

This is the second loss of life in the Irish fishing community this week after the sinking of a fishing boat one mile of the Louth coast resulted in the death of a fisherman whose body was recovered from the wreck of his fishing vessel yesterday by the Irish Navy Dive team.
