marine spatial planning workshops

CINEA and DG MARE organised two workshops on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) drawing over 300 experts and policymakers

Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) is gearing up for its next phase, with a focus on enhancing strategic vision, data harmonisation, and addressing key challenges.

Recently, the European Commission’s CINEA and DG MARE organised two workshops, supported by the EU MSP Assistance Mechanism, shedding light on critical issues within MSP. Drawing over 300 experts and policymakers, the events served as platforms to drive momentum in this crucial domain.

Data harmonisation stands at the forefront of MSP, demanding seamless coordination and robust information exchange. The Technical Expert Group on Data for Maritime Spatial Planning (TEG Data), established in 2020, has been pivotal in advancing MSP data management. With its latest contributions presented on 13 March 2024, TEG Data unveiled essential tools and guidance aimed at streamlining data collection and analysis for EU Member States. Key publications such as the Maritime Spatial Planning Data Framework and Metadata Standard for Maritime Spatial Plans offer practical methodologies to bolster planners and practitioners’ efforts.

The workshops also delved into ongoing challenges and recommendations for MSP, with insights garnered from nine EU-funded projects. These projects, ranging from ecosystem conservation to climate change resilience, underscored the multifaceted nature of MSP. Key challenges identified included ecosystem conservation, transboundary cooperation, and climate change integration, resonating with the urgent need for sustainable ocean management.

Participants stressed the importance of cohesive coordination across initiatives, advocating for stronger science-policy nexus and targeted communication to policymakers. Emphasising the intrinsic value of collaborative efforts, they highlighted the pivotal role of the European MSP platform in fostering community growth and knowledge exchange among stakeholders.

Moving forward, the feedback from these workshops will inform future policy frameworks and support mechanisms for Maritime Spatial Planning. With MSP aiming to bolster efficient marine resource management and sustainable development, these initiatives mark significant strides towards achieving the overarching goals set forth by the European Commission.

Backgrounding this momentum, MSP has been a focal point since the establishment of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), with substantial funding and project implementations across EU territories. As the MSP Directive continues to shape governance frameworks, cooperation among Member States and neighbouring countries remains imperative for realising coherent maritime spatial plans and leveraging the best available data for informed decision-making.
