Sanitary Survey Publication

The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) has released the results of a detailed Sanitary Survey for Kenmare Bay Inner, meeting EU requirements for the classification of shellfish production areas.

Conducted with Aqualicense Ltd, the survey will guide the classification and monitoring of blue mussels and Pacific oysters cultivated in the bay.

EU Regulatory Context

The survey was carried out under Article 56 of Regulation (EU) 2019/627, which requires a full assessment of contamination risks before a shellfish production area can be approved for commercial harvesting.

Implications For Monitoring And Safety

The updated sampling plan strengthens microbiological monitoring in shellfish and informs annual classification decisions. By identifying localised risk areas and improving representative sampling, the survey enhances consumer protections and supports the sustainable management of aquaculture in Kenmare Bay Inner.

SFPA Position

The SFPA said the survey reflects its commitment to evidence-based classification of shellfish areas and safeguarding public health through robust monitoring of potential faecal contamination. Shellfish monitoring remains a critical safety measure to prevent outbreaks and ensure seafood remains safe to eat, protecting both consumers and the shellfish industry.
