irish fisheries brexit fund

Government calls €100m fuel plan “crucial”, but fishermen await details as fuel costs soar and the fisheries scheme remains unfinished.

Targeted Aid to Help Fishermen Cope With Soaring Fuel Costs

Ireland’s fishing industry is set to receive significant financial relief under a new €100 million Fuel Subsidy Support Scheme announced by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD.

After days of nationwide protests, the package, confirmed on 12 April 2026, aims to counter unprecedented increases in the cost of Marked Gas Oil (MGO), which has almost doubled since late February, placing acute pressure on the fishing sector as well as farming and contracting communities.

Up to €5 Million per Month Ring‑Fenced for Fisheries

Of the total fund, up to €5 million per month will specifically support fishers and other specialised sectors such as forestry and horticulture. According to the Department, Ireland’s fishing fleet has been hit particularly hard by the surge in fuel prices, with MGO rising from €0.97 to €1.80 per litre in recent weeks due to geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

The Department describes the pressures on fishers as “acute,” prompting the development of a tailored scheme to ensure relief reaches those most impacted.

Tailored Fuel Scheme for Fishermen Under EU State Aid Rules

A dedicated fuel support mechanism for fishers will now be designed in line with EU State Aid requirements. While the broader scheme will distribute funds based on verified 2025 fuel usage, the fisheries component is being structured to meet the specific operational and regulatory circumstances of the sector.

The Department has indicated that this element of the support package will be progressed as a priority, given the severity of current cost pressures on fishing vessels and coastal operators.

Government Says Support Reflects Urgency and Sectoral Need

Announcing the package, Minister Heydon emphasised that Government recognises the seriousness of the situation, he said:

“This Government recognises the exceptional pressure that rising fuel costs are placing on our farmers, contractors and fishers. This targeted and practical support package ensures that those most exposed to these increases will receive meaningful assistance at the most critical time of year.

“We have worked intensively with representative stakeholder groups in recent times, and I believe that this represents a fair and effective scheme based on actual fuel usage, taking account also of the vital work played by farm contractors in our farming systems. This approach ensures that funding is directed where it is needed most, helping to sustain essential food production and rural economic activity.”

Ministers of State Noel Grealish, Michael Healy‑Rae and Timmy Dooley also welcomed the supports following intense stakeholder engagement across the affected sectors, including fisheries.

Implementation Under Way Ahead of Peak Season

The Department has already begun preparations to implement the scheme, noting its scale and complexity. The fuel subsidy will apply to the period from March through July—traditionally a peak fuel‑use window for both farming and fishing operations. Officials say timelines will be carefully managed and that fishery stakeholders will be kept fully informed as the dedicated support structure is finalised.
