Freezing Completed After Strong Season

Freezing of Japan‑grade capelin finished at Síldarvinnslan’s fish factory in Neskaupstaður on Saturday.

Speaking to the Síldarvinnslan website, plant manager Geir Sigurpáll Hlöðversson said the season had gone extremely well, with smooth operations throughout the campaign.

Once the final production run was completed, the factory underwent a full clean‑down, and preparations began for processing capelin roe. Staff were then given a well‑earned break from shift work.

16,500 Tonnes Processed at the Factory

A total of 16,500 tonnes of capelin have been frozen at the plant this season. The volume includes 10,000 tonnes of male capelin and 6,500 tonnes of female capelin, of which around 5,100 tonnes were Japan‑grade.

Börkur NK Bringing 2,000 Tonnes for Roe

The pelagic vessel Börkur NK landed in Neskaupstaður this morning with 2,000 tonnes of capelin for roe processing. The catch was taken in four hauls.

Skipper Herbert Jónsson said the first haul was taken off Svörtuloft, with later hauls taken off Rif and Ólafsvík. He reported widespread capelin presence, noting fish moving in from the west, as well as off Vestmannaeyjar and Ingólfshöfði.

According to sampling carried out on board, the female proportion is between 50 and 57 percent, and more than 90 percent of the females have already released the roe sac. Roe content is measuring around 24 percent.

Once the vessel landed full‑scale roe production began at the factory.
