Five Men Indicted for Murder and Deprivation of Liberty on Danish Fishing Vessel
The Central and West Jutland Police have filed charges against five men aged between 29 and 42, accusing them of murder and deprivation of liberty on board a cutter in the North Sea in January 2023.
The prosecution alleges that the men were involved in the killing of a 41-year-old man during their time at sea. The case is set to be heard at the Court in Holstebro, with the first court day scheduled for 26 April 2024, from 9.00am to 3.00pm. The trial is expected to span 12 days, with the verdict anticipated to be delivered in mid-June.
The investigation into the incident, which occurred over a year ago, concluded earlier this month. The case centres around the death of Alf Villum Jensen, who was allegedly murdered by his colleagues during challenging weather conditions on the North Sea.
The incident came to light at the end of January last year when the crew of the fishing vessel Inger Katrine L.1, operating out of Hvide Sande, reported finding a lifeless man on board. Alf Villum Jensen was airlifted to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.
Despite the distressing discovery, the fishing vessel did not immediately return to land after alerting authorities. The reasons for this decision remain unknown. Eventually, after two days, the vessel reached Thyborøn, where the police apprehended the crew.
Initially, all five fishermen pleaded not guilty during their arrest. However, following a marathon constitutional hearing in February, they were remanded in custody on charges of manslaughter. Their remands have been extended each month, but now they will remain in custody until the trial date.
