Dr Susan Steele has taken up the post as Executive Director of the European Fisheries Control Agency despite track record in SFPA

The former Chair of the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) in Ireland Dr Susan Steele has taken up her position as the new Executive Director of the Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA).

In April 2021, the EFCA announced Dr Steele as their new appointee following the end of Pascal Savouret’s tenure. She will hold the position for an initial five-year period.

In their biography on Dr Susan Steele, the EFCA claims she has a solid background in fisheries management and control. She had been Executive Chair and CEO of the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority of Ireland since 2013, and during her tenure she had been before several Dáil Committees being questioned on the actions of the SFPA.

Before taking the helm of the SFPA, she was Head of Innovation at the Seafood Development Centre from 2009 to 2013 and Head of Aquaculture and Business Training in Ireland’s Seafood Development Board from 2006 to 2009.

She holds a PhD from the National University of Ireland, an MBA, a Masters in Education (M.Ed) and a Bachelor in Marine Biology.

Under the supervision of the Administrative Board, the Executive Director is responsible for the management of the agency and the execution of the Agency’s operational activities.

In a PECH Committee meeting in May, Dr Steele says she plans to increase the number of fisheries patrol vessels operated by the EFCA from one to three, and increasing remote monitoring on fishing vessels.

On her taking-up office yesterday the EFCA said, “It’s a new day at the European Fisheries Control Agency – EFCA!

“Today, Dr. Susan Steele takes office as Executive Director.

“Dr. Steele brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the agency’s mission of promoting the highest common standards for control, inspection and surveillance under the CFP.

“Welcome!”

In reply, Dr Steele said “I’m honoured to be joining the fantastic team in EFCA. Thank you for the really warm welcome!”
