Norway and the Faroe Islands have signed a zone access agreement for mackerel in the North East Atlantic and Arctic Ocean for for 2021
Faroese vessels shall be able to fish up to 83,524 tonnes in the NE and in the fishing zone off Jan Mayen, which corresponds to 50% of the Faroe Islands’ national mackerel quota.
Correspondingly, Norwegian vessels can fish 83,524 tonnes of mackerel in waters under Faroese jurisdiction.
A prerequisite for the agreement to be reached is that the authorities in the Faroe Islands have now repealed parts of the landing obligation that Faroese vessels have had. Mackerel fished in Norwegian waters can thus now be landed in Norway if the vessels so wish. Mackerel landed in Norway must be traded through or with the approval of the Herring Team. Similarly, Norwegian vessels can deliver mackerel to the Faroe Islands if they wish.
In addition to the current checkpoint, there will be a new checkpoint “India” in position N64 10 – E 000 00.
“I am pleased that Norway and the Faroe Islands are continuing the agreement on mutual opportunity to fish in each other’s zones. I am particularly pleased that the Faroe Islands are now abolishing the obligation to land mackerel fish in Norwegian waters to companies in the Faroe Islands, so that Faroese vessels can once again land mackerel catches at Norwegian receptions,” says Minister of Fisheries and Seafood Odd-Emil Ingebrigtsen.
The 2021 agreement will see Norway and the Faroe Islands gain mutual rights to fish for mackerel in each other’s zones. Faroese vessels must be able to fish up to 83,524 tonnes in Norwegian waters, which corresponds to 50 per cent of the Faroe Islands’ national mackerel quota. In previous years, the Faroe Islands have been able to fish 35 percent of their national quota in Norwegian waters. A new and important element is that the Faroese authorities abolish parts of the landing obligation for Faroese vessels, so that all mackerel caught in Norwegian waters can also be landed in Norway.
