The Danish Fisheries Agency’s new fisheries control vessel ” Nordsøen” (North Sea) has now been completed and will be named in Skagen today, Wednesday 24 August 2022.

“Nordsøen” replaces the existing control vessel “Vestkysten” and thus becomes the agency’s largest vessel to date and thus the spearhead of the agency’s control of fisheries in the North Sea and Skagerrak.

Fisheries Minister Rasmus Prehn has long had a strong focus on strengthening control of illegal fishing. The new control vessel will play a central role in enforcing fishing regulations in the North Sea and Skagerrak. At the same time, the minister has announced that the penalty for illegal fishing must be increased, while tools in connection with illegal fishing must be confiscated to a greater extent.

“Nordsøen” was built by Hvide Sande Shipyard Steel & Service, which won the task in an EU tender in 2020. “Nordsøen” is designed with high requirements for seaworthiness and manoeuvrability, high environmental requirements, and is, as the first Danish fisheries control vessel, prepared for to be able to handle drones that take off and land from the ship.

Director of the Danish Fisheries Agency Nanna Møller says:

“With our new control vessel, we are getting a modern and top-tuned vessel that will contribute to ensuring control at sea in Danish waters for many years to come. The North Sea is to replace the control vessel Vestkysten, which since 1987 has handled the control in the North Sea and Skagerrak. Our skilled crew is very much looking forward to taking over the new ship, which is both bigger and faster than the West Coast and equipped with the latest systems, including monitoring and documentation of violations.”

The “Nordsøen” meets the strictest requirements for the discharge of harmful substances (Tier III), and the building has placed emphasis on choosing environmentally and climate-friendly solutions in relation to, among other things, cooling systems and utilization of battery systems.

“Nordsøen” will sail with a fixed crew of 9 people but can accommodate a crew of up to 14 people. The ship’s main task is fishing control in the North Sea and Skagerrak but is also part of the general rescue preparedness. In addition, the “Nordsøen” will participate in international control tasks in the North Atlantic.

The formal naming of the “Nordsøen” will take place at a ceremony in Skagen Harbor on 24 August 2022.

“Open ship” on Saturday 27 August

For the public, the Danish Fisheries Agency will hold an “open ship” in Skagen Harbor (berth 14) on Saturday 27 August 2022 from 11:00 and 15:00. Here, the agency keeps its doors open to all interested parties who have the time and desire to visit aboard the ship.
