Patrick has been involved in the fishing industry all his life having inherited the vocation from his family. He is currently the owner of Roaring Water Bay Rope Mussels, which is involved in mussel production, and has been the CEO of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation since 2016.

Patrick is a regular contributor to The Fishing Daily, and his work for the Irish fishing industry over the past six years has been immense. Something that has not gone unnoticed in the political world and internationally.

Last year at the end of January, when the Russian navy announced that it was going to hold a military exercise off the southwest of Cork in the Irish EEZ, Patrick along with the IS&WFPO members opposed it and said they would not vacate the target area. This forced the Russian Ambassador to call a meeting with the IS&WFPO chief. Patrick and Irish Fish Processors and Exporters Association (IFPEA) CEO, Brendan Byrne attended a meeting with Ambassador, Yuri Filatov. During the 50-minute meeting they convinced the Russians to move their exercise outside the EEZ.

Patrick said their objection to the military exercise was because it was going to be held in a sensitive marine area where fish came to breed and spawn. A military exercise would annihilate important fish stocks that fishermen depended on.

The story of fishermen in southwest Cork making the Russians move their military exercise was picked-up all over the world, leading to TV appearances for Patrick.

Oliver will speak to Patrick tomorrow in a special podcast on his announcement to find out why he has made the decision to move into politics.
