The man whose body was recovered from the sea at Sliabh Liag, Co Donegal last night has been locally named as James Byrne from Cashel in Kilcar.
Mr Byrne was discovered in the water close to the vicinity of the cliffs sometime before midnight last night after a search operation. Earlier, the alarm was raised around 8.30pm when a boat was discovered near Sliabh Liag on Donegal’s southern coastline.
A full-scale search and rescue operation was launched by Malin Coast Guard that involved the Sligo-based helicopter R118, Killybegs Coastguard, and RNLI units from Bundoran and Árainn Mhór.
The man’s body was found near the boat and brought ashore by Killybegs Coast Guard. He was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Letterkenny Hospital where a post-mortem examination had been arranged. His body was released earlier to his family this afternoon.
A file will be prepared for the Coroner.
It is believed the incident occurred between 6.30pm when Mr Byrne was last seen by another local fishing boat and 8.30pm when his boat was spotted drifting.
