A fisherman has died following an incident in Galway Bay this afternoon.

The man was on board a boat when he got into difficulty close to Salthill, at lunchtime.

 

Galway RNLI Lifeboat was called to assist the crew of a local fishing boat which got into difficulty on Galway Bay this afternoon (Monday 02 November 2020).
 
The alarm was raised at lunchtime by a man on board the boat which was located at the time between Blackrock and Silverstrand.

 The Irish Coastguard tasked Galway lifeboat to the scene and upon arrival the lifeboat crew took the casualty on board and brought him back to Galway Docks from where he was transported by ambulance to University Hospital Galway.
The lifeboat crew on this call out were Helmsman Martin Oliver, Brian Niland, Lisa McDonagh and Declan Killilea.
The Health and Safety Authority has been notified about the fatality and investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It’s understood the deceased man is from a well known fishing family but his identity will not be released until all family members have been informed.
