Ursula von der Leyen has announced her new College of Commissioners with Costas Kadis being named as the EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans.
The newly nominated EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, brings a wealth of experience in environmental and agricultural policy to his role. Hailing from Cyprus, Kadis has had a distinguished career in public service, notably serving as the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment in his home country.
In his role as Commissioner, Kadis is expected to focus on sustainable fishing practices, marine biodiversity, and the protection of the EU’s oceans. His background in environmental science and his experience in managing complex policy areas such as agriculture and rural development align well with the EU’s growing emphasis on balancing economic needs with ecological sustainability. Kadis has been a strong advocate for conservation efforts and sustainable management of natural resources, which will be crucial as he navigates the challenges facing the EU’s fisheries sector.
As the Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Kadis is likely to address pressing issues such as overfishing, the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems, and the need for more sustainable aquaculture practices. His leadership will also play a key role in guiding the EU’s external relations on marine issues, including negotiations with third countries on fisheries management. Kadis is expected to champion policies that align with the EU’s Green Deal, promoting a healthy marine environment while supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities.
Speaking on his appointment, von der Leyen said, “I count on his experience to help build a resilient, competitive, and sustainable sector and present the first European Oceans Pact.”
