Take part in the University of St Andrews is calling for participants in the Scottish inshore creel fishery survey and be in to win £50
A research project currently being conducted by the University of St Andrews is looking to gather information from fishermen on the use, recovery, and disposal of fishing gear within Scotland’s inshore creel fishery.
To achieve this creel fishermen are being asked to complete a short online survey which has been developed following concerns raised regarding the amount of fishing gear associated with this sector currently being deployed.
The aim is to gain further insight based on fishermen’s own experiences at sea and views on this. The survey is completely anonymous, takes no more than five minutes to complete, and the information shared will be used solely for academic purposes.
Ellie McLennan, the co-ordinator of the project says, ““During recent conversations with creel fishermen around the coast, concerns about increasing amounts of both active and derelict fishing gear associated with their sector and the knock-on effects of this in terms of impact on stocks, catch rates and gear conflict were raised again and again. This survey is a way of trying to formally quantify the scale of these concerns in different geographic locations, by gathering insights from creel fishermen based on their own fishing practises and experiences at sea. In turn this information will potentially help identify what the most practical and effective solutions might be to ease these concerns, and protect the long-term viability of the sector”.
