In a gathering of European Union Fisheries Ministers in Bruges, Belgian today, Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas, voiced his unequivocal support for the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), emphasising its pivotal role in ensuring sustainable and profitable fishing practices across the EU.

Addressing the meeting convened by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Minister Planas underscored the significance of fisheries and aquaculture products in bolstering food security within the EU. He commended the primary sector for its tireless efforts in providing citizens with diverse and high-quality food options.

Advocating for structured dialogues between policymakers and stakeholders, Minister Planas emphasised the importance of addressing the challenges faced by farmers, ranchers, and fishermen collectively. He highlighted the benefits of fostering a collaborative environment to tackle future challenges effectively.

Minister Planas lauded the CFP for its role in enhancing standards of quality, sustainability, and safety within the fishing industry. He stressed the need for proactive policies to promote fish consumption, citing the nutritional benefits of fish products and their low carbon footprint.

Asserting that sustainability and profitability are intertwined, Minister Planas called for measures to modernise and enhance the competitiveness of the fishing sector. He emphasised the necessity of aligning the European Maritime Fund for Fisheries and Aquaculture (EMFAF) towards fleet renewal, advocating for investments in modern, efficient, and decarbonised vessels.

Highlighting Spain’s commitment to decarbonisation and sustainability, Minister Planas referenced discussions from the Informal Meeting of Fisheries Ministers held in Vigo in July 2023, during Spain’s presidency. He emphasised the importance of transitioning towards a fleet less reliant on fossil fuels, ensuring safer working conditions for fishermen while making fishing a more appealing career option for the youth.

Minister Planas’ endorsement of the CFP and his call for concerted efforts towards sustainability and modernisation underscore Spain’s proactive stance in shaping the future of European fisheries policy.
