Spain has hosted the second round of negotiations to renew the fisheries agreement with Norway, a critical deal for the Spanish cod fishing fleet.
The discussions took place this week, focusing on ensuring continued access to Norway’s fishing grounds and maintaining the sustainability of shared fish stocks.
Renewal of a Strategic Agreement
The fisheries agreement between the European Union and Norway is of significant importance to Spain’s fishing industry. It allows the Spanish fleet, particularly those operating in the northern regions, to catch cod and other species in Norwegian waters. With the current agreement set to expire, the renewal process is seen as essential to safeguarding the livelihoods of many Spanish fishing communities.
Spain’s Leading Role in Negotiations
Spain has taken a leading role in these negotiations, hosting the talks and underlining the country’s commitment to preserving its fishing interests. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food emphasised the importance of achieving a balanced and fair agreement that secures access to fishing grounds while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fish stocks.
A spokesperson for the Ministry stated, “This agreement is vital for the Spanish fleet, particularly for vessels that rely heavily on cod fishing in Norwegian waters. We are working to ensure that the renewal reflects the needs of our fishing communities and supports sustainable practices.”
