Handbook of fish species

Comprehensive EU fish species handbook highlights biological traits, fishing data, aquaculture insights, and vital conservation strategies

The European Parliament’s Policy Department for Structural and Cohesion Policies has released the “Handbook of Fish Species Exploited in the EU” (PE 759.322), a vital resource for the European Union’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

This December 2024 study, commissioned by the PECH Committee, offers a detailed overview of the main marine and freshwater species harvested or farmed within the EU.

Key Highlights from the Handbook

The handbook underscores the diversity of species exploited in EU waters, detailing over 900 species landed by EU vessels and 100 farmed species. Aimed at supporting sustainable practices and conservation, the document categorises species into finfish and shellfish, showcasing their biological traits, geographical distribution, and the conservation measures implemented.

Biological and Conservation Insights

For each species, the handbook provides:

  • Scientific and Common Names: Names translated into eight EU languages.
  • Biological Characteristics: Habitat type, water column position, migratory patterns, and average size.
  • Fishing and Farming Data: Landings and production figures from 2013 to 2022.
  • EU Conservation Measures: Total Allowable Catches (TAC) and Minimum Conservation Reference Sizes (MCRS).

Conservation and Management Efforts

To prevent overfishing and ensure sustainability:

  • TACs are set annually, aligning with regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs).
  • MCRS standards help minimise the capture of juvenile fish.

Resources for Stakeholders

Links to additional resources provide deeper insights into species-specific quotas, stock information, and production statistics, making the handbook an indispensable tool for policymakers, fishers, and aquaculture operators.

Impact on the EU’s Fisheries Policy

By presenting scientific, commercial, and conservation data, the handbook reinforces the EU’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices and compliance with international marine biodiversity standards.

This publication aligns with the EU’s broader strategy to maintain the delicate balance between economic viability and environmental stewardship in the fisheries sector.
