EU Ministers Clash Over Post-2027 Fisheries Funding and Future Consultations

EU agriculture and fisheries ministers have raised concerns over the European Commission’s proposal for post-2027 support to the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), the European Ocean Pact, and wider maritime and aquaculture policies.

Meeting in Brussels today, Monday 22 September, the Council heard from the Commission on its framework for 2028–2034 funding.

While some ministers welcomed moves toward simplification and flexibility, most criticised the limited budget and warned that integrating fisheries into a broader financing structure could distort competition and undermine a level playing field.

The Council stressed the need for a “future-proof” fisheries policy with adequate resources and incentives to help the sector withstand mounting environmental and economic pressures.

Ministers also discussed preparations for the 2026 EU–UK and EU–Norway consultations, as well as trilateral talks with the UK and Norway on jointly managed stocks in the North-East Atlantic. The EU’s position will be based on ICES scientific advice and the objectives of the CFP.

Over an informal lunch, fisheries ministers exchanged views on simplifying fisheries regulation, with calls to cut red tape while maintaining sustainability commitments.
