Marine Ingredients Denmark has welcomes new EU rules for fisheries control which highlight third-party weighing and increased transparency

The Danish industry association, Marine Ingredients Denmark (MID), has welcomed the European Commission’s new, detailed rules for fisheries control and enforcement, according to an announcement made on 20 November 2025.

The regulations, which are designed to harmonise procedures, simplify, and reduce the administrative burden for both Member States and commercial operators, were officially published on 12 November 2025 in a delegated act and an implementing act.

EU Control Rules Adopted to Reduce Burdens

The new rules are scheduled to come into force on 10 January 2026. However, to ensure a smooth transition for Member States and the industry, the enforcement of certain control provisions will be phased in gradually until 2028.

MID, which represents the Danish fishmeal and fish oil sector, stated that they particularly support the initiatives concerning third-party weighing, increased transparency, and a more harmonised control across the entire European Union.

The organisation noted that since the Danish sector is internationally leading in control, species determination, and traceability, it advocates for fair and transparent regulation that supports the sustainable exploitation of marine resources.

Industry Proposals Incorporated into New Law

Marine Ingredients Denmark was actively involved in the legislative process, submitting formal consultation responses and comments to both Danish authorities and the European Commission. The organisation expressed satisfaction that the Commission incorporated several of their proposals, specifically those regarding the application of tools for weighing and the requirements for storing associated data.

The organisation affirmed its commitment to supporting regulatory efforts, stating that the new rules are: “an important step towards strengthened control mechanisms and a more coherent regulation across all Member States.”

Code of Conduct Sets National Standard

To promote best practice within its sector, Marine Ingredients Denmark has developed its own Code of Conduct. This set of guidelines establishes clear requirements for weighing and species control during landings and deliveries. This initiative aids in achieving increased transparency in reporting and strengthens co-operation with national authorities and research institutions.

To guarantee a uniform and reliable standard, the organisation employs accredited third-party inspectors to carry out sampling, species control, and weighing. MID confirmed that it will continue dialogue and co-operation with Danish and European authorities to support correct and uniform control practices throughout the EU.
