Danish Police conclude their investigation into the case of a suspicious death onboard the fishing vessel Inger Katrine in the North Sea
The Cutter Murder Investigation Concludes: Trial Looms for Five Fishermen
The Central and West Jutland Police have concluded their investigation into the case of a suspected murder on board a fishing vessel in the North Sea that occurred just over a year ago.
The case involves five fishermen who, for 14 months, have faced accusations of murdering their colleague, Alf Villum Jensen, during their time on the North Sea in challenging weather conditions.
According to investigation manager Theis Thylstrup, the police have completed their inquiry, marking a crucial step toward potential legal proceedings. Now, it falls upon the prosecution to formulate charges against the five fishermen. The specific charges, whether it be manslaughter or another offense, will be revealed when the indictment is finalised.
The incident unfolded at the end of January last year when the five fishermen alerted authorities about a lifeless man on board the Hvide Sande fishing vessel Inger Katrine L.1. The victim, 41-year-old Alf Villum Jensen, was airlifted to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Despite the distressing circumstances, the crew of the boat did not immediately head for land after raising the alarm. The reasons behind this unusual course remain unknown. Eventually, after two days, the 17-metre fishing vessel reached Thyborøn, where the police were waiting to apprehend the crew.
All five fishermen initially pleaded not guilty during their arrest, but a marathon constitutional hearing in February led to their remand in custody for manslaughter. Subsequently, their remands have been extended each month, with the latest extension set to last until March 22.
As the investigation concludes, no specific date has been announced for the trial, but it is expected to take place in the district court in Holstebro. The upcoming legal proceedings will shed light on the events surrounding the tragic incident that unfolded on the North Sea fishing boat.
