Danish Minister Sparks Outrage With Anti-Trawling Rap at Nature Event

Danish Environment Minister causes outrage with anti-trawling rap in Hirtshals, sparking backlash from fishermen and politicians alike

A Danish government minister has provoked national uproar and condemnation from fishermen after performing an anti-trawling rap at a public event, accusing the fishing industry of “destroying the Danish sea for decades.”

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke (S) appeared on stage at the “Naturens Stemme – Battle for naturen” conference in Hirtshals on Thursday evening, where he led the crowd in chanting “TRAWL-FREE, TRAWL-FREE” during a self-penned performance that targeted bottom trawling.

The stunt, which was recorded and shared by Nordjyske on Facebook, was met with disbelief and anger from Denmark’s fishing community, many of whom feel the minister has ridiculed a profession central to the country’s heritage and economy.

“I’m deeply shocked,” said Jeppe Kærsgaard Christensen, a fisherman from Thyborøn. “How the hell can he come up with that? That he doesn’t have more respect for us fishermen — for who we are and what we do. We really feel stepped on. This is the last straw.”

Heunicke opened the rap by declaring, “Our friends in the fishing industry have been destroying the Danish sea for decades,” prompting an enthusiastic response from a tent packed with environmental activists.

Christensen called the minister’s performance “a kind of hetz” against the industry and pointed out the insensitivity of delivering the speech in Hirtshals — a town with deep ties to fishing. “It’s as unintelligent as anything can get,” he added.

Fishermen’s Leaders Say Minister’s Remarks ‘Disrespectful’ and ‘Without History’

Niels Kr. Nielsen, chairman of the Hirtshals Fishermen’s Association, criticised Heunicke for undermining the very people who built the town. “It is completely out of proportion. Hirtshals is built on fishing, and the Social Democrats in our municipality have always supported fishing,” he told Altinget.

“I think it is disrespectful and without history, and I am worried about what the Social Democrats want with our local area,” Nielsen added.

Politicians Join Fishermen in Condemning Minister’s Behaviour

Members of the Danish Parliament and European representatives quickly rallied behind the fishing community. Liberal Party MEP Asger Christensen said, “It is absolutely outrageous that a minister thinks it is appropriate to blame fishing for destroying the sea for decades, even if the audience is green activists who would rather see fishing closed.”

Kristian Bøgsted of the Danish Democrats, currently engaged in negotiations on the future of fisheries policy, said the minister’s behaviour “appears as a mockery of a proud and traditional profession” and called for an apology. “Such behaviour shows neither respect for the fishery nor for the responsibility that a minister should take on.”

Per Larsen of the Conservative Party added that fishermen have no interest in harming the sea. “It will spoil their future. This wasn’t funny.”

‘The Good Tone’ Forgotten on Stage

Ironically, Minister Jeppe Bruus (S) had only hours earlier spoken at the same event about the need for “a good tone” in public discourse, urging participants to “talk to each other differently.” His colleague’s theatrical assault on one of Denmark’s oldest industries appeared to disregard that entirely.

The incident comes at a sensitive time, with negotiations ongoing around Denmark’s national fisheries policy. For many fishermen, Heunicke’s performance has not only insulted their profession but also deepened concerns about the government’s direction.
