Danish officials are holding out hope that the UK will reconsider its ban on sandeel fishing in its waters, which takes effect today

Today, March 26, marks a significant day for Danish sandeel fishermen as the British ban on sandeel fishing takes effect. However, amidst growing frustration and uncertainty, Danish officials are holding onto hope that the UK will reconsider its decision or face potential repercussions from the EU.

The ban, announced by the UK on January 31, prohibits sandeel fishing in British waters, raising concerns over its compliance with the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), commonly known as the Brexit agreement. As the clock ticks down to the start of the sandeel fishery on April 1, there is no indication of a resolution in sight.

MEP Asger Christensen, a member of the EU Parliament for the Liberal Party, has been vocal in condemning the British decision, calling it a breach of the TCA. He emphasises the need for legal action to hold the UK accountable and ensure compliance with the agreement.

Christensen, along with Pierre Karleskind, chairman of the EU Parliament’s fisheries committee, has urged Fisheries Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius to intervene and uphold the provisions of the TCA. They emphasise the importance of maintaining access to British waters for fishing vessels as agreed upon in the Brexit deal.

The Danish efforts to address the sandeel ban have been extensive, with Christensen leading a series of diplomatic engagements and discussions with EU officials and British representatives. Despite these efforts, the British government has shown no signs of relenting, prompting concerns about the discriminatory impact on Danish fishermen.

The sandeel ban has sparked widespread frustration among Danish fishermen, who rely heavily on British waters for sandeel fishing. The ban’s purported rationale, citing seabird conservation, is met with skepticism, with critics viewing it as a targeted measure against Danish fishermen.

As the sandeel fishery season approaches, Danish officials are racing against time to secure a resolution to the ongoing dispute. The EU’s response, including the possibility of imposing sanctions on the UK, remains uncertain, adding to the complexity of the situation.

The coming days are crucial for Danish sandeel fishermen, who are anxiously awaiting clarity on the fate of their livelihoods amid the escalating tensions between Denmark and the UK over the fishing ban.
