Shetland skipper Tom Robertson of ‘Brighter Hope’ LK 98 has adopted the innovative technology of CatchCam for high quality precision fishing

In the relentless pursuit of precision and efficiency in the fishing industry, Shetland skipper Tom Robertson of ‘Brighter Hope’ LK 98 is spearheading the adoption of cutting-edge technologies to enhance fishing practices.

With the deployment of a CatchCam underwater camera onboard, Robertson is revolutionising the way his vessel navigates the waters, gaining unprecedented insights into the performance of his fishing gear.

“We have door spread sensors but no exact way of knowing what our nets are doing,” explains Robertson. “Once we got the CatchCam mounted in the correct place, we achieved good results on seeing exactly what our gear was doing.”

Mounted strategically on the twin rig trawl of Brighter Hope, the CatchCam captures comprehensive footage of various aspects of the gear’s performance, with particular emphasis on ensuring optimal fishing results by monitoring the squareness and positioning of the gear. Robertson affirms, “To enable optimum fishing results, we need our gear to be towing square and also firmly on the bottom. Well, the video put my mind at ease.”

Tom, along with his brother Ross Robertson and friend George Jamieson, took ownership of the Shetland fishing vessel Brighter Hope, back in 2022.

Robertson’s positive experience with CatchCam is echoed by the Shetland Fish Producers’ Organisation (SFPO), which has reported similar success following trials with two CatchCam cameras. Designed to enhance catching techniques and reduce fuel consumption, these cameras are poised to revolutionise fishing practices in the Shetland fleet.

“Our fishing crews in Shetland are committed to sustainable and efficient fishing methods, and our investment in this technology will support them in understanding and adapting their fishing gear with even greater confidence than was previously possible,” shared SFPO chief executive Brian Isbister.

Fishing industry professionals and enthusiasts keen to explore the capabilities of CatchCam firsthand are encouraged to visit the SafetyNet Technologies team at stand E7 during the upcoming Scottish Skipper Expo. The team will be on hand to provide demonstrations and guidance on leveraging CatchCam for optimal fishing outcomes.
