The new FV Courageous LK-470 from Vestværftet for Courageous Fishing (Whalsay) Ltd of the Shetland Islands
The Shetland Islands fishing community has recently welcomed a new addition to their whitefish fleet with the arrival of the FV Courageous LK 470 for the Courageous Fishing (Whalsay) Ltd.
Ian Shearer and his three partners started fishing together in April 2015 with the 87ft Campbeltown built Courageous, which was previously known as the Guardian Angell. The following year the team added a new crew member and after the successful partnership grew, and the decision was made to upgrade from the 1993 boat to a fully modern trawler.
The single-rig trawler is designed in-house at Vestværftet in Hvide Sande and was delivered in March 2021.
The hull is built in Gdansk, Poland and completed in Hvide Sande. The vessel is built according to MCA regulations and classed in Bureau Veritas.

On choosing the Danish shipyard Ian said, “We were just impressed with the other boats that have come from Ove. The Kelia, Boy John, Rosebloom and Tranquillity.”
All fantastic boats from the designing board of Ove Kristensen but has Ian found much difference moving from a boat with the wheelhouse aft to a boat with the wheelhouse forward:
“So far I’ve seen no difference,” he said. “She seemed to handle the head on gale steaming across the North Sea with no problem.”

The new design means a new layout for hauling and shooting for the skipper and the crew, with the codend coming onboard over the transom rather than on the starboard from the traditional layout of the former Courageous.
“We’ve only had two days fishing, so we are still getting used to it. As far as I can see it’s a lot easier and quicker shooting and hauling.”
