Skagen Port increases market share to 60% of Denmark’s fish landings despite a drop in total landing value during 2024
The Port of Skagen continues its positive development, cementing its role as Denmark’s leading fishing port, according to the latest figures from the Danish Fisheries Agency.
In 2024, Skagen increased its market share by 4%, with 60% of all fish landed in Denmark coming through its port. In terms of value, the port also saw an increase, with its share rising from 41% to 42%.
Landings Value Drops, but Market Share Grows
Despite this growth in market share, the total value of fishing landings in Skagen dropped by 100 million kroner. The value declined from DKK 1,710 billion (€222.3 million / £188.1 million) in 2023 to DKK 1,607 billion (€208.9 million / £176.8 million) in 2024.
This decrease is attributed to lower purchase prices for industrial fish and herring compared to the previous year. However, in terms of volume, landings remained almost identical between 2023 and 2024.
The volume of food fish, shrimp, and lobsters has remained stable, with the value of food fish in particular increasing.
Optimism for the Future
Despite challenges, Skagen Port remains resilient. Its ability to maintain dominance in Denmark’s fishing industry highlights its importance as a hub for seafood landings and trade.
Willy B. Hansen, Director of Skagen Port, commented:
“It is gratifying that Skagen Port, despite challenges in the fishing industry, maintains its position. We have positive expectations for the future, and we are working purposefully with businesses and the fishing industry to optimize conditions and create new opportunities for growth.”
With Skagen continuing to attract the majority of Denmark’s fish landings, the port remains a critical economic driver for the country’s seafood sector.
