Danish fishing company Themis Fiskeri A/S and Karstensens Shipyard A/S have signed a contract for the construction of a new 75.30-meter Pelagic Purse Seiner / Trawler.

This new project is the result of extensive and intensive collaboration between the ship owner and the shipyard.

The Team Behind Themis

Themis Fiskeri A/S is run by the well-known Ryberg fishing family from Rörö, Sweden, along with partner Sebastian Hansson.

  • Anders Ryberg, the senior owner, spearheaded the company’s transformation, moving its base of operations to Skagen, Denmark.
  • The next generation, Björn Ryberg, is now the principal owner and skipper, and will be responsible for the new vessel’s daily operations.
  • Sebastian Hansson is also a partner and will serve as a skipper on the new vessel.

Focus on Sustainability and Efficiency

The new vessel, which will also be named “Themis,” will operate under the same principles as the current one, focusing on pelagic consumption and industrial fishing quotas, primarily for herring, mackerel, and sprat.

The current “Themis” replaced the previous vessel of the same name earlier this year, which was delivered by Karstensens Shipyard as new building no. 437 in 2018.

The Ryberg family and Themis Fiskeri A/S expressed their satisfaction at the opportunity to build yet another new ship in close cooperation with Karstensens Shipyard. The shipyard, in turn, is honored and grateful for the loyalty and trust shown by Themis Fiskeri A/S in contracting a new vessel once again in Skagen.

Both parties worked intensely to create a concept deemed highly attractive, both economically and technically. A major focus was placed on the vessel’s operating profile.

The company’s declared goal is to conduct sustainable fishing with minimal NOX/CO2 emissions per kilogram of fish caught.

This commitment resulted in a carefully considered combination of new solutions and proven arrangements, leading to the most cost-effective and climate-optimized project.

  • The propulsion system is optimized for the vessel’s operating pattern, where the majority (around 80%) of the time is spent on free-sailing, utilizing a large, single propeller.
  • The new “Themis” will be outfitted with electric winches and an electric fish pump.

Design and Delivery

Special emphasis has been placed on optimizing the working conditions, safety, and comfort for the crew. The design, outfitting, and arrangements were developed in very close collaboration between the owner and the shipyard.

The new “Themis” is an in-house design by Karstensens Shipyard, similar to the 18 other new buildings currently under construction for owners in Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

The vessel’s hull will be built at Karstensen Shipyard Poland. The completed vessel is scheduled for delivery in July 2028.

This contract is among the most valuable ever signed by Karstensens Shipyard for a fishing vessel.
