MarinTrust and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership sign MoU to strengthen collaboration on responsible marine ingredient sourcing, traceability and sustainability
Memorandum of Understanding Signed in Athens
MarinTrust and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration on responsible sourcing in the marine ingredients sector.
The agreement, announced on 16 September 2025 in Athens, formalises a long-standing relationship between the two organisations and sets out shared goals for improving sustainability across global supply chains.
Shared Goals and Commitments
The MoU commits both organisations to closer alignment on governance, project support, and data sharing. SFP will continue to hold seats on several MarinTrust committees, including the Governing Body Committee and Social and Ethical Committee.
The two organisations will jointly support initiatives such as the FAO Gulf of Thailand Fish Project, the MarinTrust Multispecies Pilot Project and the Global Roundtable for Marine Ingredients.
SFP’s Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) ratings will be integrated into the MarinTrust Improver Programme, with MarinTrust contributing to review and revision processes. The two groups will also share data and expertise, including the use of FishSource and the FAO Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries (GRSF).
Industry Reactions
Libby Woodhatch, Executive Chair of MarinTrust, said: “This MoU marks a significant step forward in our longstanding relationship with SFP. By aligning our efforts, we can more effectively drive improvements in marine ingredient sourcing, traceability and production, ultimately benefiting ecosystems, communities and the users of marine ingredients such as the global aquaculture sector, the omega-3 nutraceutical industry and the pet food sector.”
Dave Martin, Deputy Division Director at SFP, commented: “We are delighted to formalise our collaboration with MarinTrust, which started a long time ago and has resulted in fruitful projects such as the Multispecies Pilot Project and the Gulf of Thailand Fish Project. Together, we can amplify our impact and accelerate progress towards a more sustainable and equitable seafood supply chain.”
