Karstensens Skibsværft A/S has delivered the new 39.30-metre flyshooter/trawler STØDIG to owners Asbjørn Selsbane AS from Tromso, Norway
On September 02, 2020, a contract was signed between Asbjørn Selsbane AS and Karstensens Skibsværft A/S for the construction of a new 39.30 m Danish seine fishing vessel/trawler
The completed vessel was handed over to the shipping company on May 4, 2023, after some delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and delays from suppliers.
The shipping company, Asbjørn Selsbane AS, is owned and operated by Andreas Hansen from Tromsø, Norway.
Asbjørn Selsbane is well-established in the coastal fishing sector and currently operates the vessel “Asbjørn Selsbane” with rights for pelagic and whitefish, and has previously operated a smaller vessel, also named “Stødig.”
The new vessel will partially replace the previous “Stødig” and will be used for whitefish fishing, as well as prawn trawling and fishing for snow crabs. The ship is equipped with tanks for live fish, and the majority of the whitefish catch will be delivered as fresh and iced in iTubs/tubs. Freezing facilities have been installed primarily for shrimp and snow crabs.
The shipping company Asbjørn Selsbane originally had its base in Lødingen and has been operated by the Hansen family for several generations. Andreas Hansen has been running the company for 30 years and has now also involved his oldest son, Erlend, who has completed skipper school. The shipping company is now based in Tromsø on Kvaløya. This project is the fourth new construction project led by Andreas Hansen.
The current “Asbjørn Selsbane” was also built at Karstensens Skibsværft, and the shipping company and the shipyard have thus worked well together for many years.
The new vessel is a state-of-the-art combination vessel, designed for fishing both marketable fish, prawns, and snow crabs, with the latest machinery, equipment, and outfitting. The project as a whole has been developed through close and intense cooperation between the shipping company and the shipyard.
The new vessel will partially replace the previous “Stødig” and will be used for whitefish fishing, as well as prawn trawling and fishing for snow crabs.
The hull has two continuous decks, a main deck, a shelter deck, as well as aft and boat decks. The hull, aft and boat decks, bulwark cladding, and gallows are made of steel. The wheelhouse and signal mast are made of aluminum. The hull has a round bilge with a transom stern, a moderately raked bow, and a bulbous bow. The aft part of the vessel is designed with a knuckle line/bulbous stem and transom stern.
Below the main deck, the hull is divided into the following watertight compartments: forepeak, bow thruster/ fuel oil tanks, cargo section (freezing cargo) with a double-bottomed tank for freshwater underneath, tank section with tanks for live fish, engine room with wing tanks, and main engine connected to reduction gear with nozzled propellers, as well as aft peak with fuel oil, lubricating oil, and hydraulic oil tanks.
On the main deck, the vessel is divided into the following watertight compartments: forepeak/storage room, packaging room, freezer machinery room (port side), and a large factory deck. Towards the aft/port side, there is an accommodation section and all the way aft, a receiving bin, with an exhaust casing on starboard side and a ventilation shaft with access to the engine room on port side. At the very aft, there is a workshop on starboard side and a changing room on port side.
“Layout on the main deck is equipped with 5 double crew cabins, a toilet/bathroom with laundry facilities, a changing room, as well as a corridor and staircase.
On the shelter deck, there are storage rooms located under the aft deck and the accommodation section. Aft of the superstructure, there is a trawl winch with a large trawl deck equipped with 3 net drums, a trawl gallows with starboard exhaust casing, and a ventilation shaft with a descending ladder on the port side. There is also a stern hatch.
The layout on the shelter deck includes a mess room with a day area and a separate TV lounge, a galley, a provision room, 2 single and 2 double crew cabins, each with their own toilet/bathroom, as well as a hospital, corridor, and staircases.
On the boat deck/aft deck, there is a superstructure with 3 trawl winches located aft. The superstructure includes accommodation with 2 single crew cabins with their own bathroom/toilet, as well as an electronics room.

On the deckhouse/bridge deck, there is a wheelhouse with a 360° view and tall windows at the aft.
The design philosophy behind the main/auxiliary engine configuration is as follows:
There is one power take-off (PTO) installed on the main gearbox, which is intended for the primary operation of the vessel’s power supply through the shaft generator (800 kW).
For additional power supply, the vessel is equipped with 2 diesel generator sets, each with a capacity of 400 kWe. The electrical system is designed to allow parallel operation of the 2 diesel generators and the shaft generator. Furthermore, the electrical system is equipped with a Power-Management-System (PMS) that manages power consumption and automatically starts the generator sets.
During fishing operations, where the electrical winch system is used more or less continuously, the PTO on the main gearbox and thus the shaft generator will be engaged. When full power is required for the winches, there will be no need for full output from the main engine. The main engine will thus be used as a power source for both propulsion and power supply. Therefore, it is not necessary to have the auxiliary engines in operation.
If there is a need for additional power for the propulsion system, the auxiliary engines are large enough to provide sufficient power to run the vessel’s normal power supply, including the load on the electrical winch system.
The above ensures fuel-efficient and economical operation, with optimal utilization of the main engine, while maintaining a high level of reliability.
